This is really, really important.
MAYDAY.US is trying to do something big and they need our help.
I like to think about our government like a computer (having co-founded Apple Computer, that's how I think about a lot of things), and democracy is America's operating system. If it's not working correctly, some really bad things can happen.
I grew up during the Vietnam War days, opposing authority. I'm always for the little guy and against the big guy who has power and money being able to buy their way.
That's exactly what is happening today. We all know that things aren't working right in our democracy. It's because the big money powers control our politics.
Having the support of superPACs controlled by wealthy donors is one of the most important factors in determining who gets elected. Those politicians then decide who pays taxes. And guess what? It's the people with money who are able to avoid paying, whereas those of us who work do get taxed.
We're supposed to have a government of, by and for the people. We own the government; we are the ones who pay for it. But over the last few years, we've discovered that our money is being used for stuff we don't want, things that benefit the people with the money, rather than us.
That's where MAYDAY.US comes in. They're building a movement of people, around the country, to elect leaders who will end the rule of big money politics. And they've already won some victories this year: helping three champions of democracy win their primaries, including Zephyr Teachout, who won her Congressional primary on Tuesday.
But they need us to get involved to really fix the system.
This isn't about spending lots of money on TV ads. They are hiring organizers who will get us working together to debug America's operating system.
It's the people power we need to make a difference and create a new American Revolution.
They've set a goal of raising $50,000 by midnight tonight so that they could hire organizers. They've almost reached that goal but I think we can do a lot better. I want us to raise $75,000 for MAYDAY.US and I've talked them into giving us a few extra days to do it--until July 4th. While we're celebrating our independence, let's help end the control of big money politics over our democracy.
Become part of the movement. Contribute before July 4th to help them hire those organizers in key districts across America.
They even recruited a friend to match our donations, up to $15,000. Your support will go twice as far in making a difference on the ground and building a movement to fix the operating system of our country.
Just go to MAYDAY.US and make a donation. Help reclaim our democracy.
It's a big deal.
